Saturday night marked a pivot point in the career of La Verne resident Kenton Gray as he sped around the half-mile oval at Irwindale Speedway. The event marked the end of several weeks of last minute-preparations that culminated in a “smashingly successful” sponsor event held at Los Angeles Racing Experience, where Kenton works as a driving instructor.
Guests began to arrive at Los Angeles Racing Experience around 6:45 pm just after the on-track autograph session, where they had just gotten their first glimpse of the regal and imposing new 27 car. The event was well catered, and the announcement of a sponsor relationship with Bridge Publications, publishers of the popular self-help bestseller DIANETICS: The Modern Science Of Mental Health, by L. Ron Hubbard marked a milestone in Kenton’s long-standing driving career, which started at the age of 8 as a champion kart racer.
When asked to comment about the new sponsor, Kenton remarked, “DIANETICS is a book that helped me in many ways since I first read it many years ago. It helped me get better control over the obstacles I had to get through to reach goals I was passionate about. It’s a great honor to have a sponsor relationship that’s so directly related to my making it this far.”
With contracts having been signed only days before, and the new 27 car’s graphics literally applied hours before the track opened on Saturday, the team had accepted the fact that the car would not be set up well for Saturday night’s race. As Kenton put it, “we knew the car wouldn’t hook up for the race, but we made adjustments and got better as the day went on. We qualified remarkably well considering we only took possession of the car two days ago, and it was a complete rush to pull of a full race with only one minor brush with a wall coming out of turn 4. This is the beginning of a long future for us, and we’re more than excited about how things look right now.”
