The FMG auto racing program, headed by star rookie driver Kenton Gray, has accelerated it's agenda to qualify for NASCAR Nextel Cup competition by the 2006 season. "Nobody thinks this is possible, but our planning is solid, and prospective sponsors are in for a pleasant surprise when they see what we're capable of," Kenton commented during testing of a Super Late car earlier today. "We're moving ahead fast, and that means getting into Super Lates right away. We have what it takes, both in terms of my background and track experience and in terms of FMG's technical and marketing resources. It's going to be a rocket ride right to the top.
"Right now we're in negotiations for primary sponsorship to start running the Super Late series immediately. Needless to say, this is exciting news for everyone at FMG, and I think the staff over at Irwindale is getting a kick out of our progress. They haven't seen our style of approach before. People usually just don't move this fast."
The FMG racing program places heavy weight on it's ability to provide the sort of marketing and promotional products that corporate level sponsors find attractive, and the decision to move into the Super Late class as an immediate target is a strategic move that will certainly send the right message to both fans and prospective sponsors.
Kenton Gray, who's racing career started at the age of 8 years old, seems unaware that his "fast track" attitude could possibly reflect an "unrealistic view" of what he might be able to accomplish. His career story continues to be "newsworthy" as well as unique - and with a trend of top qualifying track times and front-running performance during race events, his progress is confirmed and is certainly turning more than a few heads.
Kenton plans to continue running Legends while testing and grooving in with the Super Late class.
Kenton is currently looking into a Ford model Super Late that shows promise as an entry point into the series, and plans to begin entering events as early as September.
Look for further announcements in the near future.
